Miracle of the Human & Humane Spirit

With all the doom & gloom surrounding end of 2013, let's begin 2014 with an appreciation from LASS (taken from LASS FB page)

When LASS was set up early this year to help Ganesan's 200 + dogs, we didnt have the slightest idea on how we were going to achieve our goal of building a Shelter and moving all the dogs, which were currently housed in a basement car park in Brickfields (100+) and on a rented piece of land in Seremban (150+).

We had rented a Land, had supporters who believed in our cause, but how to build a Shelter proper which estimated cost was about RM250K/-

There were so many challenges but, mainly cost factor and a reliable person to see the building through. And then came an angle in the form of Kenny Chew. Kenny was persevered to complete the Shelter by end December 2013 as we were pressured to move the dogs by the local council. And Kenny wanted to ensure that the Shelter was World Class . Oh no, he was not having it any other way!!!

And today, the Shelter is all ready and waiting to receive our dogs. The dogs can only be moved when we get our permit from the Kuala Selangor local council. Documents have been submitted and we are waiting anxiously.

What can we say Kenny? The most difficult of all challenges is over because of your kindness and perseverance and most of all your BELIEVE in our cause.

Thank you so much Kenny. Our furkids are forever indebted to you. Our furkids will enjoy peeing on the trees, rolling on grass, kicking the sand. Their 8 years of confined in a small space will finally be over.

Please continue helping us by contributing towards the maintenance of the Shelter and feeding the dogs.

Thank You All.

MOST people fall for the “awwww” puppy factor but there are some excellent reasons for adopting an adult dog.
First, there is no toilet-training to be done. If you have never had a dog, being spared this experience can be a very good thing. Also, if you adopt a dog that’s been properly loved, she or he will have been trained to walk on a leash, come, sit and other basic commands. You still have to learn how to communicate properly with your pet, but the hard work’s been done.
Second, if you’re taking in a mixed breed, you won’t be presented with a tiny pup that suddenly blooms into a dog the size of a small horse. By adopting an adult dog, you will know exactly how much exercise your pet will need, how much living space, and what sort of food budget you’re looking at.
Third, your pet’s character will be clearly visible. With pups, you can never be sure if they will be boisterous when grown up, quiet, good with kids, sweet with cats, and so on. With an adult dog, you will work with a known character.
Finally, you will be saving a life. Shelters are so full, and people are so reluctant to adopt pets that aren’t in the cute puppy stage, that adult dogs are often put down straight away. By taking in a pet who is in need, you are doing a good deed.
So when you want a canine companion, please talk to your nearest shelter or rescuer about adopting an adult dog.

Muslim couple gives shelter to 500 dogs and cats

Up north of Malaysia, in one of the small villages in Alor Setar, Kedah, a Malay couple (Pak Mi and Mak Intan) is giving refuge to up to 500 dogs and cats.  This is quite unusual because many Malays, being Muslims regard dogs as untouchables and so stay away and end up hating dogs.

When asked why, she relates an incident when she was washing at the edge of the river, she fell in because it was soapy and slippery.  A few puppies who saw what happened quickly barked and called out to the older dogs further in the village. She said 5 or more big dogs rushed down to the river and pulled her out! She was soooo grateful, she began to take care of them and any other stray dogs, no matter how badly hurt or diseased. Most are puppies whose parents were euthanised by dog catchers/the council.

Life, is of course not easy for them. As the number grows, they are in dire need of funds to feed and care for these animals. Due to obvious budget constraints, they r currently living & sleeping in their car (which they jokingly call 4-star hotel as it has 4 wheels and air-conditioning).

They have also been told to relocate because of complains.

They have also been ignored and received snide remarks by other fellow Muslims as what they are doing is seen to be wrong.  But according to Pak Mi and Mak Intan, its a joy to see the animals get well and happy. They have so much love among man and animal. So, their reply is - its up to them and their maker (and refused to be judged by others).  As u read the comments below the video, u get a debate about the rights and wrongs of this couple.. As usual, there r some supportive and some with silly ideas and comments displaying ignorance.

It is truly sad and heartwarming at the same time to hear of their kindness to these poor animals who now have a home and protector. Wasn't that one of Man's responsibility? - to care for the lesser able beings created by God? Wasnt that why Man was given the brains (intelligence) and power?

SO PLS DONATE TO THIS COUPLE TO HELP THEM HELP THE STRAYS

The dogs are SAVED!

I was having a heavy heart knowing the 15 Dec deadline (literally- dead-line!) for the Klang dogs was approaching. if no one, claims them, they all will be destroyed (such a cruel sounding word!).

But SPCA sent the following update :

Animal rescuers and pet owners alike have claimed 60 dogs from the Majlis Perbandaran Klang pound in the last one week - thanks to the extensive coverage in Sin Chew Jit Poh, New Straits Times, Malaysia Today, blogs and Facebook.

Animal rescue group Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better rescued 12 puppies from the pound, while animal protection group AnimalCare rescued 36 adult dogs and are temporarily boarding them at the Lotus Life Liberation Park (LLLP).

Pet owners from Klang also came to claim 10 of their dogs.

SPCA Selangor applauds the efforts and dedication of the rescuers - to assist them under their MissionHELP program, 2 of their vets will be making a trip to the LLLP, Bentong on Monday, 18 Dec 09 to provide medical check-ups for the 36 dogs, vaccinations, and treatment for ticks and skin problems.

In January, their Klinik Kembiri team will be carrying out a spay/ neuter program for the Klang dogs. All the dogs (including the earlier dogs from Pulau Ketam) will also need tick-collars to keep ticks and fleas at bay, as it could otherwise be a difficult problem to manage with a large colony of dogs roaming on the vast grounds.

  • Save A Life from the MPK Pound - Add: Pusat Kurungan Haiwan, Kawasan Perindustrian Bandar Sultan Sulaiman, North Port
Please call the pound keeper Mr Balu at 016-3705196 if you would like to adopt a pound dog as soon as possible.

  • Donate to MissionHELP - You can help make a donation to help these 36 dogs;RM35 to purchase a tick/flea collarRM60 to neuter a male dogRM90 to neuter a female dog

DVS's Ultimatum to Selangor Local Councils to build humane dog pounds

Malay Mail 10th March 2009 - The Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) has given three Selangor local councils a month to construct dog pounds in accordance with its guidelines or face being slapped with action for animal cruelty.

The order was issued by department director-general Datuk Dr Abd Aziz Jamaluddin in response to a Malay Mail report last Friday which highlighted that Ampang Jaya Municipal Council, Klang Municipal Council and Kajang Municipal Council were allegedly housing captured strays, as well as licenced dogs, in the councils’ vans and trucks as these councils do not possess their own animal pounds.

Deeming the councils’ actions as unacceptable, Dr Abd Aziz said his department had given them more than enough time to abide by the guidelines on the housing and extermination of strays.
“By the end of next month, if they do not have their own pounds, they will face action for animal cruelty offences,” he told Malay Mail.

Hell Holes created by MPKlang, MPKajang and MPAmpang Jaya

Recent investigations into stray dog control measures by local municipals highlighted the hell holes that stray dogs impounded are thrown into. These Municipals do not even have pounds.

  • MPKlang operates an inhumane and detestable "pound". MPKlang has promised over the years that they will build a new pound and stop using wires to catch stray and owners' dogs. Through the years, SPCA's letters and calls to action to MP Klang have fallen on deaf ears. MPKlang keeps the stray dogs in a truck. To SPCA's knowledge there is no food and water provided. The wires cut into the throats and bodies of dogs and puppies causing immense pain and a slow and extremely painful death. This cruelty is against the law and directly violate Section 44 Animals Act 1953 (revised 2006) - yet no changes and charges are made.

  • MPKajang is also another Municipal that contributes directly to the cruelty of stray and owned dogs. Stray and owners' dogs are kept in this truck. Again, we are not aware that food and water are provided. The truck is kept hidden from public view and there is no way an owner can retrieve his dog.

  • MPAJ also has no pound and relies on their dog-catching contractor, Vet-Fine S/B, to catch and destroy stray and owners' dogs. The dogs are kept in vans, for days without food and water. Vet-Fine S/B are implicated in many atrocities involving the capture and inhumane killing of stray and owners' dogs. SPCA has reported Vet-Fine's alleged cruelty to DVS and VAM but no action has been taken. SPCA has been verbally abused and threatened by Vet-Fine dog catchers in this process of gathering information.

Next week we will highlight other pounds, as well as contact details for each pound that you can write e-mails and letters to and voice your concerns!

Face -to-Face with DBKL (after TV3's expose)

In light of the recent controversy surrounding DBKL, the SPCA Chairperson called for a meeting to discuss serious allegations that DBKL are strangling stray dogs and drowning cats.

The meeting was attended by Dr Hamdan bin Ahmad( Head of Animal Welfare Dept, DVS), Christine Chin, Dr Lim, Dr Suhanna, Dr Goh, Mr Krishnan, Dr Zaidi (DBKL), and Mr Chandrakahn (DBKL Pound Manager).

SPCA highlighted that this is a new era of responsibility, accountability, reality, transparency and humanity. There is nowhere to hide for animal abusers. DBKL vehemently denied the allegations and are ameniable to compliance of the DVS Guidelines for stray animal control (May 2008).

SPCA has investigated the earlier allegation in Nov 08, and also alerted DVS who contacted DBKL to get their story - there was no hard evidence of strangulation or drowning.

SPCA said SPCA Klinik Kembiri @ DBKL will close in protest if the allegations prove to be true. Copies of the Guidelines were distributed to all present at the meeting.

In compliance to the guidelines that prioritized animal welfare, DBKL has agreed to;

a. get a qualified Vet to do the euthanasia of the dogs and cats once a week

b. anaesthetize aggressive and nervous dogs before putting down so as to reduce the stress inflicted on the dogs. This will incur higher costs.

c. create humane conditions for euthanizing animals e.g. a separate room

d. Attempt to rehome dogs, after being spayed or neutered by SPCA KK.

e. mandatory microchipping

f. differential licensing for neutered and unneutered dogs

The root causes of strays are irresponsible owners who allow their un-neutered dogs to roam or abandon their un-neutered dogs, and they need to be addressed and penalized via effective and sensible legislation.

We also highlighted an FBI fact that animal abusers are 5 times more likely to abuse children, women and be a menace to society - so cruelty to animals hardly ends there.

Hello fellow Earthlings!

If you think I am overly sentimental about animals or over-reacting about "dumb creatures", LOOK again, SEE again, FEEL their pain...

EARTHLINGS is a feature length documentary about humanity's absolute dependence on animals (for pets, food, clothing, entertainment, and scientific research) but also illustrates our complete disrespect for these so-called "non-human providers".

With an in-depth study into pet stores, puppy mills and animals shelters, as well as factory farms, the leather and fur trades, sports and entertainment industries, and finally the medical and scientific profession, EARTHLINGS uses hidden cameras and never before seen footage to chronicle the day-to-day practices of some of the largest industries in the world, all of which rely entirely on animals for profit.

Definition of : E A R T H L I N G S
earth.ling (urth ling), n. 1. An inhabitant of earth. Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, 1989

"This is the single most powerful and informative movie about society's treatment of animals. A must see for anyone who cares enough to know"- Woody Harrelson
